Even though Philadelphia's WiFi network may get torn down in a month, the head of "Wireless Philadelphia" insists that his agency's plan to bring the Internet to low-income families is far from dead.
One day after Earthlink announced it will pull the plug on the WiFi network in four weeks (see related story), Wireless Philadelphia CEO Greg Goldman (right) called a news conference at which he read a statement saying he's exploring options for the project. Then he refused to answer questions.
Reporters persisted, asking for details on the options:
"I can't talk about any specific options at this point."
Goldman later said that even if the WiFi network comes tumbling down as expected, he hopes to find broadband Internet for the low-income families now signed up with Earthlink:
"No matter what happens with the network in the future, we intend to continue our digital inclusion work."
Earthlink had pinned the failure of the takeover negotiations on Goldman's nonprofit agency, a charge that Goldman denied.
