Analysis: Obama Looks to Dent Clinton's Lead in Pa.

Campaign 2008 Coverage

by KYW's Larry Kane

The political invasion of Pa. continues in a new way starting Friday.

Interesting that in an age of jet travel,  bus tours are the rage in Presidential politics… John McCain lead the way in 2000 and now Barack Obama is on his way for a six day journey across Pa.

Hillary Clinton is out of the state for a few days, and Obama is trying to dent her lead in the Southwestern part of the state. His bus tour will also stress college campuses and young voters.

Behind the scenes both campaigns are assessing results of new nationwide surveys showing Obama still over 50% in favorable ratings despite the recent church controversy.

The polls, which also show higher negative ratings for Senator Clinton, may cause the campaign to lower the level of its rhetoric, although in truth, both sides are in the upper levels on the attack meter.

Another Pa. note, expect one theme to dominate the campaign in the next few days. It’s the economy, and as long as financial indicators are down, the money crisis will be on top.

The Clinton campaign continues courting voters in the Philadelphia suburbs sending former first daughter Chelsea Clinton to an assisted living facility in Bucks County.

Senator Hillary Clinton’s campaign includes a number of issues that appeal to the several dozen seniors who turned out to hear Chelsea Clinton. Those issues include affordable health care…the economy and bringing the troops home from Iraq. Clinton also talked about her mother’s stand on immigration reform…

"We need to invite out of the shadows the 12 to 14 million people who are here illegally and register them, and say to people if you’ve committed a crime in this country or your home country you will be deported, but if you’ve been here working hard and contributing to our economy, you’ll have to pay a fine.”

The suburbs are considered a battleground for the April 22nd primary and analysts believe the race will hinge on the voters in the counties surrounding Philadelphia.
