A Big Sendoff for Wildcats, as Villanova Heads to Detroit

by KYW's Steve Tawa

Now back from spring break, Villanova students gathered in front of the pavilion on the Main Line campus on Wednesday afternoon to send the basketball team to Detroit on a high note for that "Sweet 16" matchup against Kansas on Friday night (see related story).

"Let's go 'Nova!"

Villanova, with no seniors, has come from behind before, like in the first-round game against Clemson, during which they were behind by 18 points.

Many students seeing the players to the team bus on Wednesday afternoon weren't even born the last time Villanova won a national championship.  That was in 1985, over Georgetown, in one of the most notable upsets ever.

Jim Myers is a Villanova freshman and loves the current team atmosphere:

"I was born in 1988, so I missed it by three years. I've been a Villanova fans for eight, nine years, with two older sisters that went here. I was down in Tampa last week for the first two rounds of games -- it was awesome down there."

Coach Jay Wright smiled to the fans and thanked them for sticking with the team, especially when they lost five straight earlier in the season and it didn't appear the Wildcats were going anywhere this year.
