A Caring Provider May Be Key to Good Health Care

by KYW's medical editor Dr. Brian McDonough

I am often asked the question ‘What is the most important part of medical care?’ I am not the only one who is asked this.  It is a question that most health care providers address on a semi regular basis.

The reason it comes up so often is because there is not one set answer or one simple solution. There are many options out there.

For instance, clinical skills and judgment. A physician needs experience and knowledge to wade through all of the potential health issues linked to a patient’s complaint.

Another is technology. Without CAT scans and MRIs and the wide variety of tools out there modern medicine would not be possible.

As for me, my answer has always been the same, a sense of caring. If your health care provider cares - actually is empathetic and compassionate - it can help remove countless obstacles and lead to high quality care. Which, I believe, is all most patients want.
