People are not the only ones suffering from the current economic situation. The ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) estimates that between 500,000 and 1 million dogs and cats in the United States are at risk of becoming homeless. With so many homes in danger of foreclosure, hundreds of thousands of pets are also in danger of being abandoned or relinquished to animal shelters across the country.
Aside from the fact that approximately 5 million animals are surrendered to shelters and rescues every year, there could potentially be a 10-20% increase in relinquished companion animals this year. They fear that this can develop into a serious animal welfare issue.
The ASPCA offers some advice if you do need to relocate. First, contact friends and family members to see if temporary care is possible and available for your pet until your situation changes. Contact your local animal shelter well in advance to see if temporary shelter and care is available. Before you move to a rental property, make sure that pets are allowed first and be sure to obtain that permission in writing.
There are many ways you can help. If you were ever thinking of doing so in the past, now is truly the time to lend support to your local animal shelter or rescue with adoptions, foster care or donations like towels, blankets or toys.
