Area Police Irked by Breath Mint Marketed as Anti-DUI Tool

by KYW's Lynne Adkins

People who don't want the odor of alcohol on their breath after drinking are often turning to a lozenge called "Antipoleez," and area police are not amused.

Makers of Antipoleez claim you can pop a lozenge into your mouth and no one will be able to smell that you've been smoking or drinking.

But don't think it's going to help much if you get pulled over for driving under the influence. Police detective Mike Scarpato is the head of "DARE" in Upper Dublin Township (Montgomery County), Pa. -- the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program:

"We don't look for just odor. We look for bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. It wouldn't affect a breathalyzer test because that comes from the lungs, and this doesn't sound like it affects the lungs."

But he says it does send a bad message to kids:

"Putting a product like this out is saying it's OK to drink, and it'll influence them to get in a car drunk, and this will make it OK for them."

The product web site does display a scrolling message saying, "Don't Drink and Drive."
