Area Sheriffs Offer More Help to Foreclosed Homeowners

by KYW's Brad Segall

The sheriffs in the five-county Philadelphia area of Southeastern Pennsylvania are teaming up with Chase Bank in an effort to cut down on the number of foreclosures in the area and keep more people in their homes.

Sheriff’s deputies see firsthand what a foreclosure notice can do to families. That’s why they’ve struck a partnership with Chase to let those families know there’s help out there.

A brochure will now be included with the papers that are served on the homeowner, letting them know about a new homeownership center that’s now open in Media, Pa.

Chase spokeswoman Patricia O’Donnell says that loan advisers will meet with foreclosed homeowners face to face:

"Sit down, talk about their loans, their financial hardships, and hopefully be able to look at those and do what we’ll call 'mortgage modifications' or different programs that Chase has to offer as well.”

The program is so far only for customers of Chase, Washington Mutual, or EMC, but Montgomery County sheriff John Durante is challenging other banks in the area to step up to the plate and join in.
