Bensalem H.S. Student Treated for Tuberculosis

by KYW's Hadas Kuznits

A Bensalem High School student is being treated for tuberculosis, and school officials say parents need not panic.

School officials say those in close contact with the affected Bensalem High School student will be tested for tuberculosis on Tuesday, April 1st.

Julie Yantes, TB coordinator for the Bucks County health department, says the disease is not an easily contracted:

"TB is not like the measles or the chicken pox. TB is not easy to catch. It's (caused by) close, prolonged, direct contact over a period of time."

To parents, she says, don't panic:

"My advice to the parents of Bensalem High School is to please have complete trust in us. As the health department, our job is to protect everybody who we feel has been exposed."

TB is potentially fatal. Symptoms include fever, chills, fatige and night sweats -- however it can be treated with medication.

Superintendent James Lombardo told Wednesday night's school board meeting that students and staff members who have come in contact with the student will be tested for TB. He did not release the student's name on Wednesday.
