Census Estimates 2010 Population is Up 1% from 2009

by KYW's Mike DeNardo

The Census Bureau has issued its annual estimate of the U.S. population, until next year's head count.

"We project that the January 1, 2010 population will be 308,400,408 people."

That's up nearly one percent over last New Year's, says Census Bureau population branch chief Alexa Kennedy-Puthoff:

"We're looking at about one birth every 8 seconds -- one death every 12 seconds - and one new net international migrant every 37 seconds."

She says 308 million is an estimate representing the census bureau's best guess at the population until next year's actual count in April. Census numbers show all three states in the Delaware Valley gained population in the last year.

But Pennsylvania and New Jersey could wind up losing one Congressional seat each, once the actual census is complete.
