If gasoline prices have you thinking about biking to work, you're not alone. 

Bobby Prince, manager of the Bike Line store, on Arch Street near 11th, says he's seen a rise in pedal power:

"A lot of people are coming in, saying, 'I want to get a bike and ride to work,' (due to) gas prices, insurance, stuff like that."

So he has heard from many people looking for two-wheel transportation:

"Definitely seen an increase, even in repairs -- people bringing old bikes in that they're digging out of the basement and getting a tune-up."

Prince knows of a wide variety of commutes that people are now undertaking -- from a reasonable two miles, to 31 miles each way on a one-speed bike. He recommends something a little more nimble:

"The popular bike for the city is going to be, like, a hybrid bike. It's going to have a bigger wheel diameter than a regular mountain bike, more upright, comfortable position, 21 to 27 speeds."

And a price starting at $259 plus such necessary accessories as a helmet, flat repair kit, and a lock:

"You want to get a nice Kryptonite or Onguard lock, which is like the U-style. But make sure the wheels are locked up because they are quick-release. Take your seat and seat posts with you if it's quick-release, because these guys out here will steal them all day."

And that wouldn't save you anything at all.
