The Environmental Protection Agency says idling vehicles spew nearly 200,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide into the air each year. Now, one local community is hoping to reduce that amount.
Cherry Hill Township recently passed a resolution prohibiting gas and diesel powered vehicles from idling longer than three minutes. Lieutenant Bill Kushina of the Cherry Hill Police says officers will start by educating the driving public about the issue:
"We're going to be working with the state and the EPA to see if there's any handouts available, any periodicals that we could gather so that when we see these people, we can give them something that they can read and educate them about what idling does -- the negative impact on the community -- and they could be issued a citation for it."
The citation could carry a fine from $250 to $1,000. The township resolution is actually a re-enforcement of a state law that has been on the books for 20 years.
