Could Texting Help Remind Kids To Take Their Meds?

by KYW's tech reporter Bob Bicknell

Have you ever been so busy that you forget to take your medication? With things like video games and text messaging taking up more of their time, children are adopting their parents’ busy lifestyles. But now some doctors are using that to their advantage.

If you’re sick of your child spending so much time with text messages, take heart: there are some doctors who say they could be even sicker without them.

Physicians in Cincinnati are experimenting with a program that sends young patients text message reminders to take their medication.

It seems that children with chronic diseases such as asthma, are good at remembering to bring their cell phones with them, even to treatments, but not so good at remembering to take their medication regularly.

In a pilot program at Cincinnati Childrens’ Hospital, teens sign up to receive daily text message reminders.

The test group is small, but a fuller study is expected to begin later this year.
