Councilman Questions Recycling Efforts At Phila. International Airport

by KYW's Mike Dunn

A city councilman says Philadelphia International Airport has been dragging its feet on recycling, and he was holding a hearing on Monday to find out why.

City councilman Jim Kenney (file photo above) says officials of Baltimore Washington International Airport are testifying that BWI's recycling rate is about 60 percent. By contrast, Kenney puts Philly International's recycling rate at less than three percent:

"The airport has been studying this issue, and dealing with consultants on this issue, for the past decade. You'd have thought there would be a better result by now."

And Kenney says it's a vital issue because the airport produces huge amounts of trash, and because it is the city's gateway, the first stop for many visitors to Philadelphia.
