KYW Team Coverage

KYW's Al Novack reports
35-year-old John Reed and his 31-year-old girlfriend Monica Hayman, both of Sicklerville in Winslow township are under medical evaluation at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital.

Both have been charged overnight. Reed has been charged with the crimminal restraint of his child, aggravated assault for brandishing and allegedly threatening with toy replica of a real gun, and making terroristic threats to blow up the Walt Whitman bridge.

Reed's girlfriend Monica Hayman is charged with obstruction of justice, resisting arrest, and 2 counts of conspiracy which include intent to commit restraint, and aggravated assault. Both are being held on bail. The couple's 1-year-old baby has now been turned over to a grandmother.

KYW's Kim Glovas reports Delaware River Port Authority police chief Vincent Barelli says a DRPA officer came upon Reed after he had stopped on the bridge. Reed had his son in one arm and was swinging a baseball bat with the other .

"He was swinging it at vehicles going by, When Sargeant Bacillia wanted to approach him , he threatened him back with a weapon that he brandished that he thought when he opened his coat, and it turned out to be a plastic gun."

At that point the bridge was ordered closed. Crisis negotiators were called in and Reed and his partner, 31-year-old Monica Hayman were ultimately taken into custody. The baby boy was rushed to Cooper Hospital and is in very good condition. Police say Reed made many references to being persecuted by law enforcement officials during that time.

Reed claimed he was being persecuted by federal authorities, and initially, wanted to speak to a local TV newscaster or Michelle Obama about his case.
