Wednesday is the deadline for infants and toddlers to have flu shots and other vaccines to attend daycare in New Jersey.
New Jersey is the first state to require annual flu shots for children attending preschool or daycare. Dr. Jim Kaltenbach, a pediatrician at South Jersey Pediatrics in Cherry Hill, explains what age group is affected:
"The age requirement is between 6-and-59 months. And those people are especially susceptible to the flu, they can give it to their families and also their siblings."
He says the response at his practice has been tremendous, even before the requirement went into effect.
Kaltenbach says over 2,000 children have had the flu shots there. In addition to the flu shots, those children are also required to have the tetanus, diptheria, pertussis, and meningococcal vaccines.
