Delaware County Fires the Borough's Fire Department

by KYW's Al Novack

By a four-to-three vote on Tuesday night, the Colwyn-Delaware County Borough Council voted to revoke the operating charter of the Colwyn Borough Fire Company.

The borough council says it will no longer financially support the fire company or allow it to respond to fire calls within borough limits.

The vote was the end result of a long festering dispute over several items: use of borough funds by the fire company and an ongoing dispute fire company social club members and firefighters.

Last month, the social club gave the fire company a black eye when state police raided their club and removed illegally purchased out of state alcohol and illegal video poker machines.

The fire company argues this nothing more than a political fight between the borough\'s predominantly Democratic council and the predominantly Republican fire company board of trustees.

Colwyn Fire officials say they own their fire station and trucks and they\'ll continue to respond to fire calls in neighboring towns.

Colwyn council says they have an agreement with Darby borough and Collingdale to handle all local fire calls in the borough.
