Design Work Resumes on President's House Project

by KYW's Karin Phillips

Work on the "President's House" project is getting underway in earnest once again, but all of the activity right now is behind the scenes.

Work on the President's House Memorial Project, near 6th and Market Streets on Independence Mall, was in a holding pattern for a while until recently, when the Nutter administration gave its approval to continue.

Roz McPherson, owner's representative for the President's House project, says that things are revving up now, with the architects beginning to fine-tune the design of the memorial -- which will cost more now that the archaeological findings will be incorporated into the design (shown in artist's rendering above).

Which leads to the subject of fundraising. McPherson says about $3 million more will be needed:

"We've all be chomping at the bit, waiting to move forward with the project. At this point, it's a matter of, 'Let's get this thing going, let's get the additional funds raised.' "

McPherson says a whole new timetable will have to be developed, so it's anyone's guess when visitors will actually see site work on the project, which will likely now not be finished until 2010.
