Months after plans for a rock festival in Fairmount Park were scuttled, the Fairmount Park Commission has approved a fair gentler event -- a Walt Disney festival.
The park commission has signed off on bringing the "Disney Family Block Party" tour to Sweetbriar Field in August.
It's been organized by a separate private group, the Fairmount Park Conservancy. Executive director Kate Wilhelm says the Disney event is aimed not at rock fans, but at 2-to-8 year olds:
"There will be some live music. There'll be interactive tents with a circus-type feel, and fun zones and different interactive elements, as well as some learning exhibits, arts and crafts, kids dance parties -- all kinds of things in which kids can have a great time, in the park, in the summer."
And Wilhelm makes clear that the event won't include Disney fare for older kids, like "High School Musical" or "Hannah Montana."
The park commission last year considered a three day rock festival -- plans that eventually fell through.
