Effort to Increase Participation in the Arts in Philadelphia

by KYW's Kim Glovas

Philadelphia's largest supporter of arts and culture has announced a new initiative to double the number of people participating in those activities.

It's called Engage 2020, and it's designed to increase cultural participation from the current 18,000,000 people to 36,000,000 by the year 2020. Tom Kaiden is the Chief Operating Officer for the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance. He says culture is evolving beyond the opera and the orchestra:

"As we see the next generation participating in things like You Tube, MySpace and Garage Band, engagement must welcome them into the fold, and essentially insure that our definition of culture mirrors the evolving definition of culture on the part of patrons."

The Cultural Alliance will also depend on more personal interaction with the Philly Fun Guide and FunSavers. He says they will include more consumer feedback and the ability of patrons to give a review of events.  (for more information)
