An elderly woman died in a one-alarm house fire near 61st and Ludlow Streets in West Philadelphia's Haddington section on Tuesday night.
One firefighter was injured when he was forced to jump from a second floor window. He was treated at Hahnemann hospital for a minor injury and released.
Officials say the residence had no working smoke detector.
According to fire commissioner Lloyd Ayres, the fire was reported at around 11pm on Tuesday night in the bedroom area of the home on the second floor.
Ayers said, "when firefighters arrived, they started an aggressive attack" as flames were visible through much of the second floor and in the roof area.
It took nearly 45 minutes to bring the blaze under control.
The unidentified woman, believed to be in her 80s, had been trapped but was pulled out by firefighters and shortly thereafter pronounced dead. |
