Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has unveiled the world's first delivery unit for mothers carrying children with known birth defects.
The Garbose Family Special Delivery Unit at CHOP is revolutionary:
"It's the first ever unit of its type where the mom and the baby will be allowed to be together throughout their time."
That's surgeon Holly Hedrick who says in the new unit, there will be no separation after delivery when the child requires special care:
"Well, the usual case would be that a delivery would be planned for a known birth defect but the mother's hospital is different than the children's hospital and so that would mean that the baby would have to be transported. So sometimes it might be through a tunnel or across the street, but it could also be across the city -- or to a different city. And so, there would be a time of separation for the mother and the baby and there would be lots of uncertainty to know what's going on." |
