Former Sixer Aaron McKie Charged with Lying on Gun Application

Former Philadelphia 76ers guard and Temple University standout Aaron McKie is under arrest in Montgomery County, Pa., charged with lying on an application to buy two guns at an Upper Moreland gun shop.

Prosecutors say McKie tried to buy a .38-caliber Smith and Wesson handgun and a nine-millimeter Ruger handgun from Abington Gun Sports back in April, but on the federal and state applications, prosecutors say he answered “no” to questions related to protection-from-abuse (PFA) orders.

District attorney Risa Ferman says McKie has an active PFA against him in Delaware County, Pa., preventing him from buying a gun:

“And the reason for that is just very self-explanatory and very simple. There’s a risk deemed present in situations like that, and to provide someone access to a weapon creates a danger.”

The instant background check revealed the PFA and he was denied the guns.

McKie faces a felony charge that carries a maximum prison sentence of 15 years. He spent eight seasons with the Sixers and spent part of last year with the team as an assistant coach.

McKie was released on $50,000 unsecured bail and must continue to abide by the provisions of the protection-from-abuse order. He was also ordered to surrended his passport to Montgomery County detectives.
