Groundbreaking Ceremony Held For New Houses in N. Phila.

by KYW’s Mike DeNardo

Construction is underway on a new housing development in a long-neglected section of North Philadelphia.

Dignitaries gathered for the groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, but actually, demolition had been going on for two weeks already at Lawrence Court, a development of 50 new three-bedroom houses on the site of a former factory on Lawrence Street south of Ontario Street.

This is a section of North Philadelphia that has not seen much development, says Bill Salas, president of the Hispanic Association of Contractors and Enterprises:

"This is the first new homeownership construction project in this community, the St. Hugh neighborhood, in 60 years."
Salas says the units will sell for around $90,000. He says construction should be finished by next November.
