Growing Early Maturing Tomatoes

by KYW's Fran Sorin

If you find it frustrating to have to wait until after your last frost date before planting tomato seedlings in your garden, I have a solution for you.

There are two things you can do this coming season in order to have juicy ripe tomatoes plucked from your garden and onto your table earlier in the season.

First, buy Wall-O-Water plant protector which is a double walled tepee design: it holds water around the plant and protects it to temps as low as 16F. This device allows plants to be set outside 6-8 weeks earlier.

You can also buy early blooming tomato seeds that tend to perform well in colder climates as well as frequently having a shorter maturation time. Keep a look out for them as you browse through your catalogues.
