The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission just announced a $110,000 verdict against a Houston dry cleaners for the sexual harassment of a teenager who worked there. According to the EEOC, teenagers are among the most vulnerable segment of the workforce. If you are a teenager—or have one—who has an after school job or, if you are starting to look for a summer job, you need to know your rights in the workplace.
Under the law, you have the right to work in an environment free of unlawful harassment. If you are made to feel uncomfortable by your bosses either because of the jokes, gestures, pictures, touching or the like, regardless of your age or length of employment here’s what you should do: look at the company’s policy book to see the policy against harassment, and follow it. Complain to the person who is designated to receive complaints. By law, you can’t be retaliated against for prosecuting your rights under the policy. If that doesn’t work you can look up your local EEOC office to get more help there. |
