Healthy Menu Choices for Children

by KYW's medical editor Dr. Brian McDonough

The Center for Science in the Public Interest has gained attention for years looking at controversial medical issues and bringing them to light.

Their latest report had to do with a look at the menus of top restaurant chains and whether or not there are healthy choices for kids. The results were not surprising - plenty of high fat, high calorie choices with way too many carbs.

There are ways you can make a difference.

First, cut down on the soft drinks. Soda has empty calories.  Another important step, look for fruit and salad but be careful of too much dressing on the salad. If possible avoid fried foods.

Why are these important steps? Because eating out now accounts for a third of children’s’ daily caloric intake. That is twice the amount of thirty years ago.  Apple slices, raisins and yogurt can be helpful choices.
