The golf course construction boom is long over at the Jersey shore, so not much has changed in the last few years. But there is one opportunity for daily fee players that never existed until recently.
Atlantic City Country Club -- for decades a playground for members, famous guests, and casino patrons -- now has some public tee times available. Charles Fahy is director of golf operations:
"We have a unique setting with the Atlantic City backdrop on the golf course, and the unique history that has been afforded to us here at the club. We're the course where the term 'birdie' was coined. We've hosted six USGA major championships. We hosted the first senior tour event."
Johnny McDermott was the Atlantic City head pro in 1911 when he became the first American-born winner of the US Open.
Photos in the grill (right) chronicle visits by the likes of Bobby Jones, Bob Hope, Joe Louis, and a young Arnold Palmer -- in his US Coast Guard uniform. If you like golf history, you'll get your fill and then some.
And don't forget to join me on TV for Golfshots, presented by Buick, Sunday nights at 6pm on Comcast Sportsnet.
