Attorneys in the trial of a man charged with the murder of a Philadelphia police officer in 2007 are now working their way through a list of 200 perspective jurors, but only a handful have been chosen during three days of jury selection.
John Lewis is charged with the murder of police officer Chuck Cassidy, who walked in on a Dunkin' Donuts robbery on North Broad Street in West Oak Lane, and the prosecution is seeking a first degree murder conviction and the death penalty.
Some prospective jurors have been excused because they are fundamentally opposed to the death penalty, or have preconceived ideas about the guilt or innocence of the defendant. For example, one prospective juror told the court his brother is a police officer, and he has attended some of the fundraisers in Officer Cassidy's name. He was excused.
Lewis has pleaded not guilty. Opening statements in the case are expected sometime next week.
