Keep Your Young Athletes Hydrated

by KYW's medical editor Dr. Brian McDonough

Believe it or not, sports tryouts and camps are underway at many high schools and,  believe it or not, even some grade schools are entering into the practice. If you don't have children and played sports at your school when you were a teen you might find it hard to believe

It is just a reflection of our ultra competitive society but there is another issue that concerns me from a health standpoint and that is dehydration and lack of fluids. You know that I am always warning about the proper amount of exercise and the time of day to exercise on hot summer days. The problem in these instances is that young athletes will be trying to impress coaches in a tryout situation and not be keeping up with fluids or taking breaks.

Now don't get me wrong.  Many coaches are the most concerned about this and watch over the athletes closely, but as a parent you need to reaffirm the need for hydration and not pushing too hard.
