The return of Indiana Jones will bring hordes to the movies for a classic thrill show, but a LaSalle communications professor thinks there's more to his allure than that.
What's in a name?
"We named the dog Indiana."
Brother Gerard Molyneaux says Indy's staying power, in stories about Nazis and now Commies, takes us to a feel-good, can-do time:
"It's drawing on the myth of America, something that's above decades and changing and fluxes in taste. He even looks like the western hero."
Although in his travels, travails and triumphs, Molyneaux says there's an even old relative:
"It all goes back to Ulysses and that kind of voyage where you have to do some labors and then if you're lucky go home again."
And if you're really lucky, "It's not the years, honey. It's the mileage." A sequel. |
