Looking for Social Entrepreneurs

by KYW's Dr. Marciene Mattleman

If you’re between the ages of 18 and 35, here’s a chance to realize your dream to improve the world.

Women for Social Innovation, a Philadelphia area giving circle, awards a Turning Point Prize annually to an emerging social entrepreneur – someone with a creative solution to a difficult problem affecting women, girls or families in our region.

This first prize will help a young person launch an innovative project. Jamie Gauthier won the $15,000 Turning Point Prize for her winning idea, Mommy Grads. Jamie’s goal is to help single moms complete college.

Single moms lead 52% of all poor families in the U.S. and 35% in Philadelphia. Education is certainly a way out of poverty, but only 16% of single moms hold bachelor’s or higher degrees. Mommy Grads will help twelve of them get through college by providing mentors, resources and other support.

Women for Social Innovation’s Turning Point application can soon be found at womensway.org. It’s an opportunity for a young adult to make a dream become real.
