Marciene Mattleman, Ed.D., presents her Education Reports 15 times a week on KYW Newsradio 1060.
Mattleman is president of "ASAP" -- the After School Activities Partnerships -- a nonprofit organization that rallies the public to create after-school recreation opportunities for Philadelphia\'s kids and disseminates information on citywide recreation. Its centerpiece activity is chess.
Previously, she founded and headed four other nonprofit organizations. One of them, Philadelphia Futures, was honored by President Clinton at a White House ceremony.
Mattleman spent many years as a professor of English education at Temple University, where she taught courses in reading and language arts to graduate students and prospective teachers.
Mattleman has written more than 55 articles in professional journals and two books on reading and language activities (one co-authored).
In 1994, Mattleman was appointed by President Clinton to the National Institute for Literacy advisory board and has served as chair of that group.
Dr. Mattleman he has been honored with many awards for her work in increasing opportunities for low-income populations. Among them are the Humanitarian Award from the Philadelphia Human Relations Commission, the Ed Rendell “Doer” Award from the Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Please Touch Museum, and the MCP/Gimbel Award.
And, most recently and most significantly, Marciene Mattleman was the 2007 winner of the prestigious Philadelphia Award, given each year "to a citizen of the Philadelphia region who, during the preceding year, acted and served on behalf of the best interests of the community."
