Members of the Nutter administration continue to fall into place, with the new mayor naming his team that will focus on education and the city's beleaguered school district:
"Education is the top priority."
And now Mayor Nutter has chosen two women to be his lead advocates on education.
Lori Shorr, a vice president at the Philadelphia Youth Network, will serve as his chief education officer and child advocate. Shorr says she's ready:
"I have the background for work. My grandmother was a waitress until she was 70, so I know how to serve. And my father worked in the steel mills in Pittsburgh until they closed down, so I know a lot about making things. So I want to value that tradition and work hard together with you."
Shorr's deputy will be Sharon Tucker, currently an adviser in the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Nutter says the two will drive his goals of halving the high school dropout rate and doubling the number of city residents with college diplomas.
