Mayor's Personnel Director Out After Internal Investigation

by KYW's Mike Dunn

The mayor's personnel director has been shown the door after an internal investigation found she was favoring friends who took the civil service exam.

Gone in what appears to be a forced resignation is personnel director Tanya Smith, following a probe by the mayor's inspector general, Amy Kurland.

Kurland says Smith helped friends do better on civil service exams, in part by canceling portions of test in which they did poorly.

And Kurland says Smith tried to obstruct the probe:

"She made false statements to the inspector general investigator, and she instructed other people in the personnel department not to cooperate with our investigation."

Despite the alleged obstruction, the matter has not been referred for prosecution. Kurland says she does not know how many friends were helped by Smith.
