McCain Accepts GOP Nomination

KYW Team Coverage

John McCain accepted his party’s nomination for president on Thursday night at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota.

KYW's Brad Segall reports McCain then delivered a speech that many in the Pennsylvania delegation believe will lead him to the White House.

Many believed that John McCain would have a hard time stacking up to the speech that Sarah Palin delivered at the convention on Wednesday night. But after McCain’s speech, they were convinced this ticket will win in November.

Montgomery County delegate and political strategist Renee Amoore was right there when the presidential nominee made the rounds on the floor of the Xcel Center:

“He said ‘Renee, I’m so glad you’re here and Cindy said ‘I’m glad you’re here too Renee’ and he said ‘are you going to keep introducing me? You’re going to go around the country with me and I said ‘I’ll do whatever it takes to make you win.”

Amoore says McCain hit the right themes that will play in Pennsylvania including lower taxes, health care, education, and foreign policy.

The ticket has a campaign stop scheduled for Tuesday in Lancaster.

KYW special contributor Larry Kane reports John McCain had a lot of energy last night. He looked very young, and the setting was fantastic for him.

He really challenged not just the Democrats and Barack Obama, but his own party to stop earmarks, and that's gonna be a real problem for politicians in Washington if he's elected, because they won't have their pet projects financed by the U.S. government anymore.

One of the most missed points of the speech: he said he wanted to end foreign aid, up to a billion dollars a year, to people who do not like us.  Very controversial, but believe me, it may really stick with the electorate.
