McGreevey Off the Hook for Alimony as Divorce is Granted

by KYW's Suzanne Monaghan

The nation's first openly gay governor will not have to pay alimony to his ex-wife.

A superior court judge in Trenton has ruled that former New Jersey governor James E. McGreevey must pay just $1,075 a month in child support for their 6-year-old daughter.

His ex-wife, Dina Matos (at right), had asked for $2,500 a month alimony for four years and $1,750 a month child support.

The decision surprised attorney Eric Spevak of Adinolfi and Spevak. He says that, although McGreevey is now a seminary student and argued he could not afford alimony, the judge could have computed his income as though he were still a lawyer.

Union County Superior Court Judge Karen Cassidy scolded the couple in granting the divorce. She said the couple's anger toward each other harmed their credibility as witnesses and she said both parties had agendas.

Of Matos, she said her testimony was designed to generate a greater amount of child support based on the circumstances that ended her marriage but that argument, the judge said, is not supported by law.

The marriage crumbled nearly four years ago, when mcgreevey announced he was having an affair with another man.
