A 28-year-old Warrington (Montgomery County), Pa. man is headed to state prison for 8-16 years for causing a fiery crash on Route 611 in Horsham last summer that claimed the life of a husband and wife.
Maryanne Kupetz got a call from her doctor last July 6th. After a six-year battle, she was finally cancer-free. Her daughter says her parents had a new lease on life.
But several hours later, the 70-year-old woman and her 73-year-old husband John were killed when their car exploded after it was hit from behind.
Donald Smith was drunk and driving more than 90 miles an hour when he hit their car. Prosecutor Todd Stephens:
"The car immediately burst into flames, and they were literally trapped inside and, unfortunately, just burned alive. The pictures from the scene were so graphic and, I mean, they are really out of a horror film.”
A tearful Smith apologized to the family for what he called his "irresponsible actions." Smith said he wants to do better and make better choices, and that one day the Kupetz family will forgive him.
