The Montgomery County, Pa. sheriff is warning area residents about the dangers of mortar rounds after two "live" devices were found recently in the county.
Twice in the last ten days the bomb disposal unit has been called out to dispose of a live mortar round. Late last month, a 60-millimeter World War II-era mortar was found at a house in Upper Dublin and then on Monday, a woman walked into the Narberth police department with a similar explosive.
Sheriff John Durante says these mortars are washing up on Jersey beaches and people are bringing them back as souvenirs:
“These munitions were probably disposed of at sea and they are there. The people that are on the beaches if they encounter these things they should notify the Coast Guard or notify the life guard or police do not touch them stay away from them, they are dangerous.”
His best advice for people is to call 9-1-1. Also last week, bomb disposal units were called out twice in Bucks County. A woman brought a rocket propelled grenade to Bensalem police and a grenade was found in a home in Doylestown. |
