NJ Toll Roads Proposing Rate Hikes for Next Year

by KYW's David Madden

Tolls on four bridges crossing the Delaware River will be going up in a little over a week. And now, New Jersey’s major toll roads are asking for increases in the short and long term.

Come a week from Sunday, it’ll be $4.00 to cross from New Jersey into Pennsylvania on the Benjamin Franklin, Walt Whitman, Betsy Ross, and Commodore Barry bridges (see related story).

And now, the New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, and Atlantic City Expressway have all announced proposed toll hikes to fund capital improvements.

The average turnpike toll would go up 60 cents next year, parkway tolls would increase 15 cents per stop, and on the AC expressway the toll would go from $2 to $3 at Egg Harbor and 50 cents to 75 cents at Pleasantville.

The turnpike and parkway also are planning increases for 2012 and 2023. Look for public hearings on these plans in the fall.
