Neighborhood Group Reacts to Videotaped Police Beating

by KYW's Steve Tawa

A North Philadelphia neighborhood group says many in the community are concerned that neither the mayor nor the police commissioner 'has reached out' to them over the recent videotaped police beating of three shooting suspects. (see related story)

Outside his North Marshall Street home, the father of one of the three, Pete Hopkins, along with the Diamond Empowerment group, said police may have thought one of the passengers was Eric Floyd, who was wanted in the murder of police Sgt. Steve Liczbinski.

Hopkins wants Mayor Nutter to get more personally involved with neighbors:

"If he can go see Eric Floyd, and tell the alleged cop killer he's disappointed in him, but he can't come to these family members, which their police officers brutally beat, and he won't reach out to the families of those children."

Mayor Nutter says that "nobody likes what they saw on the tape, but Philadelphians are increasingly disgusted with criminal activity on the streets of the city."

"I've been clear and direct on both without taking sides in a complicated matter that is under investigation."

13 officers have been taken off street duty as police investigate the beatings.
