Mayor Nutter has overhauled the panel that polices discrimination in the city.
Nutter used his new broom to virtually sweep clean the John Street appointments on the Human Relations Commission. He retained Reverend James Allen as chairman, but the other eight members are all new. Nutter refused to take swipes as the old commission but he promised big changes:
"I think you're going to see a Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations that people have not seen in a bunch of years. I'm still not going to say anything about previous commissions. But it will be a much more active, engaged and involved entity."
The Commission's most prominent case in recent years involved the Speak English sign at Geno's steaks. Commission staffers filed a complaint over the sign, but the commission itself eventually ruled it was not discriminatory.
The new commission members are Rabbi Rebecca Alpert, Regina Austin, Fernando Chang-Muy, Tom Earle, Cynthia Figueroa, Chukri Khorchid, Nick Torres and Kay Kyungsun Yu. |
