Old City Restaurants Donate to Slain Officer's Family

by KYW's Lynne Adkins

Old City restaurants and bars were giving ten percent of Tuesday's proceeds to the family of slain Philadelphia police sergeant Stephen Liczbinksi, who was killed in the line of duty earlier this month (see related story).

Kevin Meeker, the owner of Philadelphia Fish and Company, one of 37 Old City establishments making contributions to the Liczbinski Family Memorial Fund, says the business owners were talking about ways to give back to the community even before Sgt. Liczbinski's murder, and were inspired by the police officer's death. They're calling the gesture "Cooks for Cops."

Meeker says this is just the first of many charity events:

"Everyone was excited and we'll make this an annual event to raise money for the survivors of cops and firemen."

He expects next year's donation to go to a general fund for surviving families.
