Olney's Engine 73 Reopens Saturday

by KYW’s Michelle Durham

In January 2007, fire fighters assigned to engine 73 in Olney had to fight a fire in their own fire house. But the repairs and renovations are now complete and the station has officially reopened.

Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers says it's been a long year:

"The members had to move everything out and move up to 63's (Engine 63). We had two houses living together and working together."

Engine 63 is at Oak Lane Avenue; close but still not the immediate area where Engine 73 serves. So fire fighters would gather over there, jump on the fire engine and head over to their burned-out fire house so they could continue their work in the Olney section.

Commissioner Ayers addressed community members:

"These men and women who fight fire for you, they were anxious to get back in while they were still building; still renovating. That's dedication and service."
