Olympics Legends Visit Philadelphia to Promote Beijing Team Trials

The road to Beijing goes through Philadelphia -- at least for those competing for spots on the US gymnastics team.

Philadelphia is the site for the US Olympic team trials, June 19th to 22nd in South Philadelphia (see previous story).

On Thursday afternoon, the legendary gymnastics coach Bela Karolyi (center of photo) was in town along with a 1996 Olympics medalist for an event in JFK Plaza ("Love Park") to promote the finals:

"The best gymnasts in the country are going to come. And of course we\'re going to sort it out through a great performance, who is making the team and who\'s going to be out of the team. Of course, there's going to be a lot of joy and excitement."

Gold medalist gymnast Kerri Strug (seen chatting with Mayor Nutter) hopes to be in Beijing later this summer. She says she likes what she sees so far:

"Their skill level is so tough. They\'re mentally very strong. So, it\'s very exciting to watch them. I know they\'re going to do great things in Beijing. I had my time, and it\'s nice to be involved with the sport (now) -- but more as a spectator than anything else."
