Pa. Authorities Using Facial Matching to Spot Phony IDs

by KYW's Hadas Kuznits

Pennsylvania state police are cracking down on fake driver's licenses. And they have some new technology to help them.

Why do people need fake IDs?  Pennsylvania state police captain David Young (right) says one of the more dangerous reasons is to illegally buy guns using false information:

"It's a classic straw purchase of weapons and putting them illegally out on the street."

But now, Penndot is using facial recognition technology to help identify photos of the same person using more than one identity:

"This is going to really help us get an upper hand on fictious identifications here in Pennsylvania."

He says police have made several arrests and have recently identified six illegally purchased guns linked to people using fake IDs.
