Charges have been filed against a Berks County, Pa. woman, who was found walking along the Norfolk Southern railroad tracks with her six-year-old son on Monday (see previous story).
Exeter Township police officer Kurt Unterkoefler (at right) says the train was able to stop before striking the pair:
"A call came in from engineers on a Norfolk Southern train. They had found mother and child injured on the railroad tracks. When they went to help the child, the mother ran away. They stayed with the child until police arrived on location. We looked for the mother and found her in the Schuylkill River."
Unterkoefler says they have charged the boy's mother, Christy Petitjean (pictured at top):
"The charges are endangering the welfare of a child, reckless endangerment, delay of railroad operations, and public drunkeness or similar misconduct."
Unterkoefler will not elaborate on the type of injuries that Petitjean or her son suffered. The boy was released to the custody of his grandparents. Petitjean will appear before a judge after her hospital release.
