Pawpaw Tree

by KYW's Fran Sorin

I’m always sniffing out varieties of trees that I want to add to my property. One that has been on my ‘must have’ list for several years is Pawpaw.

Pawpaw, botanically known as Asimina triloba, is a native fruit tree that is hardy to below -20F. Its fruit is a combination of a delicious banana like flavor with a creamy, almost custard like flesh.  And, it’s nutritious as well, offering a large amount of protein and a good source of vitamins and minerals. Pawpaw was a significant piece of the Native American diet.

Pawpaw is a superior tree for homeowners. It is a small, slow growing tree and is naturally disease and pest resistant. It offers a tropical look with long, drooping foliage that turns a bright yellow in the fall.
