Phila. Firefighter of the Year Hailed as Hero

by KYW's Michelle Durham

A Philadelphia Firefighter received special honors on Friday at the Fireman's Hall Museum.

David Pannella (above) of Ladder 29 received the 2008 Firefighter of the Year award, after he rescued four people from a burning four-story Olney apartment building.

The modest Pannella is quick to point out he didn't do it alone:

"It wasn't just me -- it's the officers, firefighters and paramedics that made a difference that day."

Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers says Fire Fighter Pannella is a person other Fire Fighters look up to:

"The members just look at him and think that he's an upbeat guy all the time.  They just talk about how well he performs, not just on the job, but also in the community.  Just a great guy."

Wanda Klusar's life was saved by Pannella:

"They are people to love. If it wasn't for them, if it wasn't for Mr. Pannella, I would not be here today."
