The two men accused in the murder of Philadelphia police sergeant Stephen Liczbinski have been ordered held for trial after a hearing in which the sergeant's final police radio call was played in open court.
Both surviving defendants -- Lavon Warner and Eric Floyd -- have been ordered to stand trial for the murder of Sgt. Liczbinski. The judge has found that there enough evidence at this preliminary hearing stage to find that they did conspire to murder the officer. A third suspect, Howard Cain, was shot and killed by police shortly after the officer was killed.
There was emotional testimony from an eyewitness to the murder. Dixie Widing, who lives in the neighborhood where the officer was shot, was outside gardening when she heard the sirens. She says she saw the car stop and saw Sgt. Liczbinski get out of his police car, then saw a man get out of the jeep being pursued and open fire.
She says the sergeant never had a chance, and she'll never forget it.
The prosecution also presented the alleged confessions of the two defendants and the police radio tapes of Liczbinski answering the call to duty, responding, trying to make the car stop, announcing his location, and then repeated attempts to reach him again. There was no answer. He'd been murdered at the corner of Almond and Schiller.
Listen to actual police radio audio at right. In the tapes, Sgt. Liczbinski's police car is referred to as "Twenty-four Andy."
