Philadelphia Readies for 2008 Cherry Blossom Festival

by KYW's Karin Phillips

Philadelphia's annual Cherry Blossom Festival begins April 5th, and includes some new events.

On Wednesday in the Horticultural Center in Fairmount Park, it was taiko drummers, cherry blossoms -- and Mayor Nutter in a kimono, taking drumming lessons:

"I think they probably won't be asking me to do that again. But it was wonderful for the one time."

Wednesday's events officially opened what promises to be the largest ever Cherry Blossom Festival of Greater Philadelphia, which runs April 5th through 19th. There are 45 events celebrating Japanese culture.

Kazumi Teune, executive director of the Japan American Society of Greater Philadelphia, talked about one of the festival's major dates:

"Sakura Sunday, on April 13th -- and all day you can enjoy the dancing and singing and Japanese food."
